When LG announced the G Watch R last week, we were intrigued by its design -- primarily because for a smartwatch, it looked remarkably like a traditional timepiece. We went hands-on with the tech-equipped clock at IFA to examine it up close.

The G Watch R has a round face, which for watches running Android Wear is still quite unusual. Android Wear is capable of running on both round and square-shaped devices, but only a few have taken advantage of the fact they can use a circular face thus far. Of the smartwatches we've tried, the round ones do tend to be a little more comfortable and sit more naturally on the wrist, and the G Watch R is no exception to this.

Tucked inside the watch is a 1.2gHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. The screen is a plastic OLED display, which sits in a stainless steel frame. The leather strap on the watch is interchangeable, but the one we tried felt lovely and soft and made the watch even more comfortable to wear.

As well as being able to access the whole range of apps across the Android Wear ecosystem, LG also has its own portfolio of smartwatch-ready apps that G Watch R owners will be able to take advantage of.

Overall, it is probably not the most attractive Android Wear watch available, but it is one of the ones that looks and feels more like a traditional wristwatch -- one that you'd be happy to wear with any outfit. This look will suit some people, and will likely widen the appeal of Android Wear in the wider market when it goes on sale in October. Expect our full review at the same time.
